The Slovak Republic is located at the precise geographic centre of Europe. It is a modern European country mixed with a deep rural tradition. This is a land where folk traditions have survived the domination of foreign rulers, and the people maintain a welcoming spirit. Many castles pay testament to untold wars and civil conflicts. The High Tatras is a magnificent range of European mountains (only second to the Alps in elevation) covering the north of the country. They are dotted with villages with deep peasant traditions. Practically every day is a saint"s day in the Slovak Republic, and "special days", festivals and public holidays are widely celebrated. The diversity and number of festivals is huge because minorities enjoy full protection of their language, culture and history under the constitution and subsequent legislation enacted into law. The recent course of Slovakian history was completely changed by the launching of a policy of economic and social reforms and accelerated economic and political integration into western Europe. Parliamentarians and ordinary Slovakians voted in favour of key reforms and in 2004, Slovakia joined both NATO and the EU.
